New technologies and versatility make the IT industry attractive
I moved to Tampere to study after graduating from high school in my home town, Nakkila. In high school I liked the mathematics, but I was especially interested in psychology and philosophy. That is why I enrolled to the University of Tampere to study social sciences. Along with my university studies, I worked in social services as an income support worker and social worker.
As my optional studies, I took some computer science courses, as I was interested in web applications and software. With the optional courses, the idea of changing to a new career field emerged. I decided to start studying business information systems at Tampere University of Applied Sciences, from which I will graduate in 2018 as a Bachelor of Business Administration.
I heard about Wapice at Portti Työelämään event organized at the Tampere University of Applied Sciences in spring 2017. I started working at Wapice soon after the event, in May, having a summer job as a software designer trainee. The most interesting thing about the work in my current position in the IoT-Ticket project is its versatility: helping the customers use the software and answering technology related questions, but at the same time being involved in software development in software design and programming tasks. My job offers an excellent viewpoint to the IT industry.
At Wapice, I have learned about product development and project work. In addition to those, exploring new technologies has been particularly pleasant and, at the same time, an essential part of working in the IT field. In my work, I can have the initiative, but also take advantage of the knowledge on difficult issues held by the group of experts at Wapice.
Another programmer develops his skills at Wapice
My name is Iiro and I am studying Information Technology and Mathematics at Aalto University. Although I left behind my first year of studies at the university, it was already my second summer job at Wapice. Programming is a hobby I have been enjoying in the past, but it was the high school’s math program that opened the opportunity for a summer job in the IT industry even before my university studies. During my high school years, I took internships with various other companies where I have developed my programming skills.
I heard about Wapice from my brother who is also working in this company. Following my brother’s example, I got interested in pursuing a career here as well. At the moment, we are implementing the IoT-Ticket analytics services and working on developing them further. It has been nice to work together with my brother, as sharing tasks and finding solutions to problems is easier when your teammate is somebody you know. Nevertheless, Wapice has a fine group of people working there.
The nicest thing about my job at Wapice is that programming is bringing challenges all the time. I have learned new things such as the development of online services, from both the server and the UI perspective. I have acquired a sense of responsibility, as well as experience in dealing with work challenges during my summer job. At the same time, this summer job offered me the possibility to further develop my skills.
