Back to Wapice! Career story of Juho Jokinen (Project Manager, IoT-TICKET)

Juho Jokinen joined Wapice in 2015 and worked for the company for 4.5 years. After a long stay in Wapice he decided to try new challenges. However, he returned to the Wapice-family in the summer of 2021. Now Juho tells us his interesting career story and what made him come back.

Tell us about yourself?

I am a 30-year-old “youngish” man, and I am working as a project manager for our IoT-TICKET® product.

I am working with various clients from different industrial sectors. My educational background is BBA in Information Technology. I graduated in 2015. I have always been interested in IT and already at the age of 12 I decided that I want to work in this field in the future and focus on programming.

However, I majored in IT-Management and because of my very social personality it fitted me well. I am a very goal oriented and driven person and I almost never say “no” to any task that is outside of my comfort zone. I feel that these are the things that make you grow as a person and learn new things.

I constantly follow the IT industry, try to keep up with the latest trends and read lots of IT literature as well as listen to podcasts about the subject. I spend my free time mainly at the gym and with my family that includes my spouse Lotta and my two-year-old daughter Nelli.

What has your career at Wapice been like from year 2015 to today?

I started working at Wapice with the title “Technical Support Engineer” back in 2015 and in this role, I developed and maintained our customers SharePoint Environments. I worked with these tasks throughout my whole 4,5 years constantly, but at the same time I wanted more challenges and responsibilities. I signed up to IoT-TICKET customer projects and I got involved fast in customer projects development with the help of my mentor at Wapice. Because I never say no to new challenges, I also got an opportunity to go and lead Wapice’s IT-team and develop our customer’s IT Infrastructure and their projects.

All these work assignments taught me a great deal of time management and organizability, which I consider are my greatest assets. I have also developed my professional skillset a lot with challenging and interesting work assignments. I am highly motivated by people and my colleagues, and in Wapice, I have always been around hardcore professionals from whom a “jack of all trades” like me can ask advice and bounce around ideas.

Why did you decide to come back to Wapice?

When I was working at a different company for a while, mainly with IT-Infrastructure, I saw different kind of working field with different type of processes and I realized that maybe this job isn’t quite the right thing for me. There was nothing wrong with my job, but I noticed that I longed for customer contact and a developing company’s processes and the hectic working environment. Being the clever boy that I am, I picked up the phone and called my old supervisor, a few days afterwards I was already signing my contract with Wapice once again.

What is your typical working day like?

My days start mainly about 05:00-06:00 when my daughter is still asleep, and I have time to reply to urgent emails and check my calendar for the day. When I have dropped my kid at the daycare, I usually start my official day either remote or at Wapice premises. My workday is filled with meetings; customer as well as internal meetings. I usually build my work calendar a week before so that I am always on track with my responsibilities and tasks.

Depending on the day I create dashboard views, documenting and logic building for our customers and communicate with them throughout the day about the next steps in the projects. I am also responsible for our IoT-TICKET Support functions, so I do a lot of documenting and researching with that also. My day usually ends around 15:00 – 16:00 and then I head home and maybe add a few calendar markings in the evening so that I am also “on top of things” with my work.

What are the things you appreciate when working at Wapice?

I am very grateful that at Wapice I have the possibility to create and schedule my own calendar, do my work the best way that I feel is the best way for me, and that I don’t need to be at the office every day to do my work. These things are always a two-way street, so I make sure that I always complete my tasks and projects on time and with success. I also value Wapice’s “Can do” -attitude that everything is possible even if problems or challenges might occur along the way.

Best memory from your career?

My best memories from my time at Wapice are pretty much normal day to day moments that keep me going. I have the privilege to work every day with one of my best friends Gunnar at the same office. We usually just go outside to have a coffee and talk about our work and other things during hectic days. I think these are the best memories for me. I have to mention also the Christmas parties, which are the few rare occasions when we are able to see a lot of Wapiceans in one place at the same time!

What is your motto?

I don’t actually have a specific motto, but I follow a guideline in my life that goes like this: If you are unhappy about something, get up and do something about it.
